How to Dictate on Windows 11 & 10 (2026 Guide)

Windows has built-in voice typing, but it's limited. Here's every method available — and why professionals use CoScript instead.

1Windows + H Voice Typing

How to Use

  1. 1. Click in any text field (Word, Notepad, browser, etc.)
  2. 2. Press Windows + H
  3. 3. The voice typing toolbar appears at the top of your screen
  4. 4. Start speaking — text appears where your cursor is
  5. 5. Press Win+H again or click the microphone to stop

Limitations

  • ✗ Requires internet — audio sent to Microsoft servers
  • ✗ Limited language support compared to AI tools
  • ✗ No tone adjustment — raw speech only
  • ✗ Times out after ~30 seconds of silence
  • ✗ No system audio capture (can't transcribe meetings)
  • ✗ Poor accuracy with accents and technical jargon

2Windows Speech Recognition (Legacy)

Available in Windows 10 via Settings → Ease of Access → Speech. This is the older, legacy system that predates Win+H. It supports voice commands (open apps, click buttons) but has lower accuracy and requires extensive voice training.

✗ Largely deprecated in Windows 11. Microsoft now pushes Win+H instead.

3CoScript — Professional Desktop Dictation

How to Use

  1. 1. Download CoScript (free, 30-second install)
  2. 2. Press F9 anywhere on your desktop
  3. 3. Speak naturally — text auto-pastes where your cursor is
  4. 4. Press F9 again to stop. That's it.
